Primary Responsibilities
- Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair electrical breakers (low‑voltage and medium‑voltage) including molded‑case, vacuum, and air breakers
- Disassemble, clean, and rebuild transformers, including replacing bushings, gaskets, tap changers, and internal components
- Perform electrical testing such as insulation resistance, turns‑ratio testing, contact resistance, and dielectric testing
- Diagnose electrical faults such as overheating, insulation breakdown, mechanical wear, or contact failure
- Recondition and refurbish breakers to meet customers or OEM specifications
- Assemble and wire control panels or auxiliary components related to breaker and transformer systems
- Operate shop tools and equipment such as torque wrenches, hydraulic presses, multimeters, meggers, and test benches
- Document all repairs and test results for quality control and customer reporting
- Follow safety procedures when working with energized or high‑voltage equipment
- Assist field technicians by preparing equipment, parts, and test kits for job sites
Skills & Technical Knowledge
- Understanding of electrical theory, especially relating to transformers and circuit breakers
- Ability to read schematics, wiring diagrams, and OEM manuals
- Experience with electrical test equipment (megger, TTR, DLRO, hi‑pot, etc.)
- Mechanical aptitude for disassembly, cleaning, machining, and reassembly
- Knowledge of oil‑filled transformers, including draining, filtering, and refilling dielectric oil
- Familiarity with NEMA, ANSI, and IEEE standards for electrical equipment
- Ability to lift 50–75 lbs and work in a shop environment
Qualifications Usually Required
- 1–3 years of experience in electrical repair, industrial maintenance, or breaker/transformer work
- High school diploma or technical school certificate
- Ability to safely work around high‑voltage equipment
- Strong attention to detail and problem‑solving skills
